Partnerships are critical to the wider efforts of the United Nations system to realize the 2030 Agenda. As set out by the Secretary-General, “The ambition and breadth of the Sustainable Development Goals make them simply unattainable without robust partnerships. The United Nations development system will need to draw on its unique convening power to help countries to broker the diverse partnerships needed at the global, regional and country levels … to find innovative solutions to pressing challenges that can be taken to the required scale”. UNESCO’s Comprehensive Partnership Strategy further highlights that “our efforts to mobilize financial and non-financial resources should be framed in a partnership-based approach founded on a sense of shared purpose and mutual accountability”.
The private sector is a key constituency for this kind of partnership. It is widely acknowledged that the implementation of sustainable development will depend on the active engagement of both the public and private sectors. For the private sector, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) not only cultivates goodwill toward businesses but also generates sound returns. For UNESCO, the private sector’s support is important to (a) learn from their ways of doing business, and (b) capitalize on the resources available to them for development.
With the private sector’s willingness to integrate the SDGs into their business operations, the time is right to move beyond traditional donors and develop capacity to explore the potential of the private sector – not just as funding partners but also as resource partners, who can possibly help us develop market-led, innovative solutions to global development challenges.
The project aims to explore the potential of private sector engagement for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. The consultant is expected to conduct (a) capacity-building activities with UNESCO staff and (b) develop marketing instruments and tools to pitch UNESCO’s value proposition to potential private sector partners.
The consultant will carry out the following tasks:
1. Review UNESCO Country Strategy Document (UCSD 2018-2022) and conduct meetings with UNESCO Programme staff to understand UNESCO’s resource needs (including but not limited to the proposed outcomes and funding gaps for all sectors).
2. Outline a strategy for UNESCO to engage with and leverage private sector resources to achieve its proposed outcomes (as programmed in UCSD). This includes summarizing the staffing and resources required by UNESCO to pursue the aforementioned.
3. Conduct a capacity-building workshop for UNESCO Islamabad staff with the objective of enabling the participants to
a. Identify common areas for cooperation with the private sector
b. Communicate UNESCO’s value proposition to potential private sector partners.
4. Develop a “value proposition” that provides the basis for UNESCO’s collaboration with the private sector.
5. Develop marketing/branding products that will attract corporate interest to UNESCO’s work. This includes but is not limited to:
a. Developing a brief, general presentation to pitch to corporations in initial outreach activities.
b. Co-branding toolkit
The consultant will produce the following deliverables:
1. A brief (5-page) inception report outlining plan of action and timeline
2. Schedule and session plan for workshop
3. Workshop outcome document
4. Branding Toolkit (including brand introduction presentation, value proposition, and other products)
5. Final consultancy report on the review, findings and recommendations for the project
Prior to any travel, it is the responsibility of the individual consultant to request and obtain security clearance through UNDSS’s Travel Request Information Process (TRIP) system for the areas to be visited, and obtain the prior approval of the Director/ Head of the field office to which their travel has been agreed. The travel request must be signed by the Director and AO. If not, the consultant is not covered by insurance for work-related illness, injury, accidents or death whilst performing their official duties or travelling on behalf of the Organization. Please note that insurance does not cover medical insurance; this, the consultant may wish to procure at his or her own expense.
Soon after signing the contract, the individual consultant will be given an official UNESCO email ID and all correspondence under the contract will have to be made through this ID. No email through private email IDs will be entertained.
The consultant will be contracted from September to November 2019. The consultancy is expected to take 45 working days.
Mandatory Skills and Experience
Advanced academic degree in a related field (International Development, Human or Social Sciences, Marketing/Branding) or equivalent demonstrated non-profit branding experience
At least five years demonstrated organizational branding experience and familiarity with SDGs, public-private partnerships, resource mobilization for non-profit organizations
Extensive conceptual and practical knowledge of developing marketing/branding pitches
Good organizational skills and demonstrated ability to organize and facilitate training workshops
Ability to establish and maintain good working relations with colleagues in multicultural environment; demonstrates integrity by modelling the UN’s values and ethical standards
Language: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
