Job Description



Background



UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.


UN Women launched its programme in Pakistan in 2007 (at that time UNIFEM) following a request by the Government and the UN and is now strategically positioned in this regard at both the national and provincial level, post devolution. In moving towards realization of gender equality and womens empowerment, UN Women provides support to innovative initiatives that promote womens human rights, with a special focus on their economic security, governance/political participation, freedom from violence, as well as preparedness and responding to humanitarian crises.



Under the overall supervision of the Country Representative, the Special Projects Intern will be responsible for conducting trend analysis, collecting and analyzing good practices on gender and womens empowerment nationally and globally, and supporting the conceptualization, development and implementation of new and existing initiatives, with a strong focus on innovative approaches. S/he will also support the Country Representative in preparing summaries of key meetings and assisting with preparation of external communications material.


Duties and Responsibilities

Develop an understanding of UN Womens work and the UN system;

Trend analysis on gender and development in Pakistan


Collating and analyzing good practices on policy, legal frameworks, and community level interventions on gender and womens empowerment both in Pakistan and globally


Support in analysis, conceptualization and drafting of project concepts or initiatives that are new and innovative


Reviewing ongoing projects across all thematic areas and advise the identify opportunities to drive innovation, including the use of ICT technologies


Support with event planning and coordination;


Support in preparing summaries of key meetings of the Country Representative for follow up


Support with drafting and reviewing external communications material prepared for the Country Representative


Expected Duration of Assignment: 6 months


Working Hours: Part-time or Full Time


Languages Required: English/Urdu


Duty Station: Islamabad, Pakistan

Required Skills and Experience



Education:


The intern must have studied/be studying law, human rights, international relations, public policy, politics, social sciences, gender or other similar subject at the university level;


Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.


Language:


Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Must also be fluent in written and spoken Urdu.


Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.


Application Information:

Note:


In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.


UN Women Internship Policy:


Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:


Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)


Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelors level or equivalent)


Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year


UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;


All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;


UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;


The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;


The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application
