Job Description


UNHCR Sub-Office Peshawar is the only office in Pakistan where persons of concern have direct access to the asylum procedure. As a result, the Interpreter Assistant will assist and support a wide range of activities.

The Interpreter Assistant is a member of the Protection team and is directly supervised by a senior member of the unit. Depending on operational exigencies and priorities this could be the Protection Officer (P3), the Assistant Protection Officer (NOA) or a Protection Associate (GL6).

The Interpreter Assistant is responsible for providing linguistic support to all operational activities. Most importantly, this includes providing daily interpretation at the protection inquiry window and to ensure efficient and accurate translations of documents submitted by persons of concern. Furthermore, the interpreter may also support with translations and/or interpretations in the voluntary repatriation process or in meetings with UNHCR counterparts, as or when required.

The incumbent will undertake the following responsibilities under the direct supervision of the Assistant Protection Officer and overall guidance of the Protection Officer at UNHCR Peshawar, Pakistan:

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES (process and functions undertaken to achieve results)

  1. Interprets and/or translates from newspapers, written reports, magazines etc.;

  2. Interprets oral conversations, discussions and interviews especially when attending meetings with high ranking officials, diplomats and others;

  3. Travels with international staff on their missions to the field for interpretation and other assistance, as needed;

  4. Responds to queries relating to the area of responsibility;

  5. Performs other duties as required.
