Job Description

Organizational Location

The Communications Associate is located in Islamabad and reports to the Head of Technical Support Unit (TSU)

 

Job Purpose

The Communications Associate is intended to provide support to the TSU applying established systems and procedures and assists in the creation of substantive knowledge by compiling, synthesizing and analyzing information to monitor implementation of recommendations and coordination in reporting task force on population dynamics

Major Activities/Expected Results

 

  • Works closely with both TSU and UNFPA teams and implements a communication related activities focusing on recommendation of the Supreme Court and priorities set forth in Plan of Action addressing population issues in Pakistan;
  • Provides critical analysis and communications guidance to the TSU through scanning and reporting of the internal and external environment, and oversees regular production of policy and programme updates in Pakistan;
  • Co-ordinates and oversees enhanced production and dissemination of communication and advocacy materials, including brochures, posters, pamphlets, programme and fact sheets, and press releases as and when needed;
  • Builds and maintains strong media and advocacy networks and relationships, ensuring regular media events, meetings of the Representative with key media persons, timely drafting and dissemination of media statements, speeches and press releases;
  • Establishes and maintains a system for constant scanning of TSU commissioned research, surveys, assessments, notes to file, field visit reports and other such internal information sources to identify, capture and make optimal communications capital/material of these for advocacy, media and capacity building purposes; 
  • Ensures timely preparation and response to global, regional and national media and advocacy events linked to this greater task, on commemoration of all FP related events;
  • Develops and produces a strong resource base for communications, including TSU/ UNFPA bulletin on a regular basis; a library of UNFPA programming areas and issue-based photo and information materials that also reflect projects funded by donors;
  • Edit various reports/proposals/studies, press releases, speeches to ensure quality, cultural and gender sensitivity and social inclusion and use as resources for advocacy;
  • Prepares timely response to the queries of the media, liaising as necessary with UNFPA CO Communication Specialist when sensitive situations arise, in particular for responding to misinformation;
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships and network with other Communication channels, key development partners, civil society organizations (including cultural and faith-based organization) and print and electronic media;
  • Perform any other task as required.

 

 

 

 

Job Requirements

Education: 

 

           Bachelor Degree in communication, journalism, media relation.

 

Knowledge and Experience:

 

  • At least five years of increasingly responsible experience in communications and public relations, working experience with the UN system is an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communications and editing skills in English;
  • A thorough understanding of the UN system in general, and especially UNFPA mandate, policies and operations, as well as the current development topics and political issues in Pakistan;
  • Knowledge of policies and program in humanitarian and development settings;
  • Keen understanding of Pakistan culture, history and political contexts;
  • Familiarity with communications approaches for planning, executing, and monitoring communications strategies;
  • Excellent computer/information systems skills.
