Job Description

Contributes to the development of a polio programme media strategy for Punjab by coordinating appropriate research and compiling and analyzing relevant data.

Assists in developing and maintaining close collaboration with state, print and electronic media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential for achieving media and communication objectives of UNICEF’s polio programme and the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) in Punjab.

Oversees media monitoring of polio coverage in Punjab conducted by the media monitoring agency. Develops and implements a strategy for tracking and addressing negative media coverage of UNICEF in relation to the polio programme, and PEI in Punjab. Tracks developments/ reporting in the Punjab media requiring corrective actions and brings them to the attention of the Communication for Development Officer. Monitors the public perception of UNICEF in relation to the polio programme, and of PEI in Punjab and recommends appropriate action to ensure momentum for achieving target vaccination levels in high risk groups and a positive image for the organization and the polio programme as a whole.

Assists in planning, logistic and administrative arrangements to develop public relations events and activities that will place the UNICEF polio programme and polio vaccination related issues in Punjab in the public arena.

Assists in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both the web and media, as appropriate. Prepares background communication and promotional materials for briefings and visits of media, celebrities, polio ambassadors, donors, international advisors and other special interest groups. Assists in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.

Coordinates the production of advocacy and communication materials (e.g., films, video, audio-visual, etc.), to complement media packages for communicating UNICEF polio programme and PEI messages for media, web, events, campaigns etc. Follows up on the production of advocacy and communication materials (e.g., films, video, audio-visual, etc.), and oversees the qualitative aspects of production, (e.g., quality control, translation, review of layouts and graphic design). Liaises with contracted media agency and relevant Punjab media outlets, as appropriate, to ensure appropriate placement and coverage of advocacy and communication materials.

Monitors and evaluates the impact of the programme activity in Punjab. Advises on modifications to the programme. Monitors and evaluates the appropriate and timely dissemination of advocacy and communication materials to target audiences, and participates in the evaluation of their impact. Provides feedback to the Communications for Development Specialist and UNICEF Chief Polio Eradication Unit on the use and appropriateness of corporate publications and advocacy materials.

Establishes and maintains an up-to-date documentation centre in Punjab for publications, press releases, clippings, photographic and audio-visual materials, posters and other IEC materials, etc.

Ensures mass media strategies are in place for Punjab. Plans must address the appropriate challenges based on the analysis of media, campaign and surveillance data.

Required Skills

LANGUAGES
Fluency in written and spoken English and Urdu. Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
