Job Description:

The FSO will work to assist in activities related to Polio Eradication and the Expanded Program on Immunization, primarily for planning, implementing and monitoring AFP Surveillance activities in Pakistan and strengthening of routine EPI.


Under the technical supervision of the senior WHO Medical Officer for polio eradication and the overall supervision of the WHO Representative, the Federal Surveillance Officer will undertake the following duties in the provinces of responsibility:

1.Support AFP Surveillance activities in the province including:

1.1.Assist in conducting training activities for AFP Surveillance and other Polio Eradication activities.

1.2.Assist provincial teams in field investigation of Hot cases as needed.

1.3.Track urgent cases through the lab and liaise between national polio laboratory and provincial teams to ensure timely feedback of laboratory results.

1.4.Monitor compliance of provincial systems of surveillance with national guidelines and policies.

1.5.Monitor surveillance quality and assist provincial teams in developing plans for remedial measures to address any surveillance deficits.

2.Participate in periodic review and detailed analysis of provincial surveillance data, monitoring of field activities and surveillance indicators.

3.Assist in the publication of National Polio Eradication Bulletin.

4.Assist in the development of training materials.

5. Support the environmental surveillance for polioviruses including:

5.1. assist the provinces in selection of the sites for environmental surveillance

5.2. monitor the receipt of the samples as per schedule; while keeping liaise with the laboratory

5.3. Provide feedback to the provinces

6. Support the Supplementary Immunization Activities (SIAs) including:

6.1. Monitoring and supervision of the SIAs as and when required

6.2. provide feedback to the district and provincial teams after the monitoring

7. Assist in preparing performing / preparing situational analyses and reports for the advisory bodies and other organizations / institutions

8. Assist in keeping regular liaise with the partner organizations / bodies for polio eradication

Skills Required
Five years experience in Public Health; experience in EPI and Disease Surveillance preferable. Compatibility with Personal Computer especially MS Office, Internet Explorer and statistical packages like EPI Info, SPSS etc. Able to spend substantial time traveling in the field.
